  • iriene · 5 months ago
Hi sis.. (I am also Hainanese). My parents went back to Hainan Island twice
but I was studying then. It is always one of my "wish destination" that i must visit in my life.
    1) Beijing - Great Wall of China - visited
    2) Holy Land - visited
    3) Egypt - Pyramid -visited
    4) Korea - visited
    5) Hainan Island - my roots -pending
I can speak Hainanese but the Hainanese in Hainan they speak quite differently.
During this CNY 2009, I entertained my cousins from Hainan.
She is quite well to do, we brought them to KLCC & Sunway Lagoon.
My other cousins brought them to Genting & Melaka. They invited us to
Hainan Island... but I just don't know when...hv to cari " kakis " to go with!
I am putting it in my prayer request... :D

    Hi Iriene.. :)
Really? It is good to know it. Another Hainanese in the blogosphere. And it is good that you can speak and keep in touch with your relatives. I believe there will be a chance to go to the island with your kakis..

Hey, I didn't know you were Hainanese too. Both my paternal grandparents are also from there, and my entire family went on a trip there a few years back (which I could not go along due to work commitments)

I've regretted ever since, as I would have liked to know where my ancestors came from. They even visited the grave of my great-great-great granddad.

But when I was a kid, I used to visit my grandparents who lived in such simple conditions too in a village in Terengganu. It was super fun hehe :)

It is always good to go back to the roots. My dad is quite interested in tracing back Mainland China.. but I think it is not an easy task..
  • curryegg · 5 months ago
Yes Lynnx. It reminds me of my grandpa although I have never see him before. And true, it is not easy to track back the mainland but not possible. If he knows the language/dialect and some details, he can find it.. Let's pray for the best.. :)

Its awesome that you get to visit the roots of your family. I've only heard story of my roots but never actually got the chance to visit. Seems like you had a blast visiting Sanya! Btw, I think most of us have ancestors that came down from China to Malaysia.
  • curryegg · 5 months ago
Hi Stanley. Yes! It was an interesting trip and you should grab a chance to visit your roots whenever there is a chance. And true. Because, well.. we are Chinese.. :)

Good for you that you still had the opportunity to go back to your ancestor's place. Its refreshing sometimes to know that your family had come a long way since back then :).
